The 6 Classes of QLD Electrical Work Licences

Let’s dive right into it. Under the Queensland government, there are 6 different types of electrical work licences, each offering different career pathways.

1. Electrical Mechanic Licence

Role: An electrical mechanic licence authorises you to conduct all electrical work.

Responsibilities: 

  • Install and change overhead electrical lines
  • Install and change electrical installations or electric lines
  • Connect electrical equipment to an electricity source
  • Repair electrical equipment

Required Qualification/Eligibility:

  • Competency in electrical mechanics
  • Completion of an approved course and apprenticeship
  • A proven period of electrical mechanic work experience
  • Provide a written statement verified by your registered training organisation and a party privy to your completed training plan

2. Electrical Linesperson Licence 

Role: This class of electrical work licence authorises you to perform all electric line work.

Responsibilities: 

  • Electrical work in the building or maintenance of an overhead electric line
  • Electrical work in the building or maintenance of street lighting (connected to an overhead or underground electric line)
  • Testing of overhead electrical lines 

Required Qualification/Eligibility: 

  • Competency in electrical linework
  • Completion of an approved course and apprenticeship
  • A proven period of electrical wiring work experience
  • Provide a written statement verified by your registered training organisation and a party privy to your completed training plan

3. Electrical Fitter Licence

Role: This licence allows you to conduct electrical work in a workshop or on site, related to electrical equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Building, manufacturing, fitting, assembling, erecting, operating, testing or repairing electrical equipment
  • Rewinding and repairing electric motors
  • Building and assembling switchboards

Required Qualification/Eligibility:

  • Competency in electrical fitting
  • Completion of an approved course and apprenticeship
  • A proven period of electrical wiring work experience
  • Provide a written statement verified by your registered training organisation and a party privy to your completed training plan 

4. Electrical Jointer Licence

Role: This licence is limited to specialist installation and work related to electrical cables and equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Installing and terminating electrical cables
  • Jointing high voltage electrical cables

Required Qualification/Eligibility:

  • Competency in electrical wiring and jointing
  • Completion of an approved course and apprenticeship
  • A proven period of electrical jointing work experience
  • Provide a written statement verified by your registered training organisation and a party privy to your completed training plan

5. Restricted Electrical Work Licence (Offered by Electro Training)

Role: The Restricted Electrical Work Licence allows electricians to perform electrical work relating to a specific trade, and is subject to restrictions and conditions. Some examples of trades that may require this work licence include:

  • Refrigeration and air conditioning
  • Electronic equipment technology
  • Gas and plumbing
  • Mechanical fitters

Responsibilities:

  • Electrical work towards the goal of your service trade

Required Qualification/Eligibility:

  • Employment in a legitimate trade or calling

You must have a verified need to conduct electrical work in your trade

  • Completion of a course qualifying you in your trade , for example Certificate III in Plumbing OR a letter from your employer advising you have 3 years or more experience in a calling
  • Completion of a Course in Restricted Electrical

6. Electrical Work Training Permit

Role: As this is a training permit, it allows electricians and other workers (such as those studying towards the Restricted Electrical Work Licence to perform electrical work in accordance with training conditions, under supervision. 

Responsibilities:

  • Complete a structured, supervised, on-the-job training program
  • Conduct electrical work under a supervising electrical training RTO 

Required Qualification/Eligibility:

To obtain a permit for electrical work training, you must: 

  • Be elgible to complete an electrical apprenticeship OR
  • Be eligible for a restricted electrical licence and require job experience under supervision OR
  • Be eligible to train for an additional licence endorsement
